SSL Troubles and Remedies
So Today’s project consists of putting entire sites on a secure connection.
My dev server has a few sites I host for myself that eventually get uploaded when ready, like this blog for example. The VM contains apache and php but no mysql because I didn’t want mysql running on the webdev vm. External to the VM, there are two LAMP servers running WordPress and silverstripe for experimenting. Normally, this isn’t an issue but I wanted to add SSL and learn how it all fits as well as making the sites available on a private domain for the SSL to work.
For the local sites within the webdev VM, I just mapped domains to the VirtualHost ServerNames and ran a program by LetsEncrypt for free SSL Certs. Easy peasy once I got the hang of it. The hard part was running proxies on the webdev VM that pointed to the other LAMP servers. The HTTP bit works just fine, once I tried to do HTTPS, I run into mix content errors and Chrome silently blocks them. Great, I gotta figure out how solve that…
