Mechanical Hard Drives As Boot Drives
If there’s one thing that really grinds my gears is computer manufactures are still using hard drives in their laptops and desktops as primary storage. In an age where Cloud Storage is popular and buying an external hard drive is cheap (sub $100 USD), it really wouldn’t be a detriment to simply put 250 or 500GB SSD in the device instead of a 1-2TB hard drive.
I like performance so SSDs are a must for running the OS. Including one would just make a computer all that more attractive. For mass storage, external or even secondary internal drives work just fine. The OS could be configured to put Photos, Music, and Video on the secondary drive by default and most people probably wouldn’t notice or care while at the same time, enjoy the boost the SSD offers.
Decently sized M.2 SSDs coupled with a spinning disk are even better.
When a low power tablet PC has better response time than a full sized laptop, now that’s just sad. I had a friend return a nice laptop cause it was slow and didn’t want to do a drive swap.
Sub $500 computers still deserve respectable performance.
Maybe it’s a ploy to get people to spend more on “high performance” hardware but still. SSDs are getting cheaper. The price per gig is getting closer to that of the hard drives. Samsung EVO 500GB SATA SSDs going for just under $100 USD now. A 250GB SSD can replace the 1TB Disks and make a world of difference.
That is all. </rant>
